Horizontal  Cleavage  Tear

Meniscal tears are classified by the plane in which they run. Here a large tear running in the horizontal plane which almost cleaves the lateral meniscus into two is shown. The normal meniscus is low signal (black) and the tear is high signal (white). The medial meniscus is intact.

The second example is a horizontal cleavage type tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus which intersects the inferior meniscal surface.
